About this tool
Pull the words out of a PDF so you can search, edit, translate or paste them anywhere. The tool reads the PDF's text layer with Mozilla's PDF.js, joins lines into paragraphs and saves a UTF-8 text file that Notepad, Word and Excel open correctly — including Hindi, Urdu and other non-English text. If the PDF is a scan with no text layer, the pages are read with on-device OCR (English, Hindi or Urdu). Nothing is uploaded.
Good to know
- Up to 300 pages; OCR covers the first 30 pages of a scanned PDF.
- Multi-column pages may come out with columns interleaved.
- Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
Frequently asked questions
Is formatting kept?
No. A .txt file holds plain text only, so fonts, columns, tables and images are dropped. Paragraph breaks are kept.
Will it work on a scanned PDF?
Yes, for English, Hindi or Urdu text: scanned pages are recognised with on-device OCR (first 30 pages). OCR can make mistakes, so proofread the result.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The PDF is processed in your browser.
Is PDF to TXT private?
Yes. This tool processes files entirely in your browser, so your files are not uploaded to our servers.
